- Appearance vs. Reality in modern media
The quote, “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me”, tells you that if you have a certain quality, that quality is useless until you show that certain quality. If you think someone has courage, that person must display their courage to be considered a courageous person. Batman has two separate identities- Batman and Bruce Wayne. He tries to do good deeds when he is either Bruce Wayne or Batman. But society views Batman as a scary and evil super hero. But in the end Batman proves everyone that he helps society and fight off the evil. It is by someone’s actions that defines who you are. Appearance will only go so far.
Darth Vader was considered an evil Jedi when he joined the Dark Side. Everyone feared him because his appearance threatened the lives of other people. He was considered a bad person, someone who is purely evil. But that later changed. There was still good inside of him because he saved his son, Luke Skywalker, from Darth Sidious. Darth Vader still cared about his son and family. In reality he was still a good person at heart. Darth Vader struggled to decide if he still wanted to be part of the dark side or change to the good person he once was. His last minute decision helped save his son from death.
Gru, the main character, is the number one super villain in the movie. He adopts three orphans because they were able to go inside Vector’s, Gru’s rival super villain, house by selling cookies. Gru is planning on stealing the shrink ray from Vector so that Gru can shrink the moon.
But Gru becomes attached to the kids and they become a family. At first it may have seen like Gru did not care about the kids and that he only cared about shrinking the moon. His appearance as a villain gave him the first impression that he was a true villain and did not have heart for other people. But in reality he has a kind heart that a loving and a caring person would have. He may have struggled to realize what kind of person he was. Maybe he wanted to be a super villain but in reality that was not who he was. He ends up being a loving father to the orphans and to his minions.
